The physics and astrophysics of massive black holes and their
stellar environment lie in the overlap areas of wide-spread
scientific disciplines and communities, which at this time are at
critical junctions in the preparation of ambitious experimental
initiatives. The diverse scientific challenges in understanding
and utilizing these unique astrophysical laboratories are strongly
coupled. The purpose of this workshop is to bring together active
researchers—observers, theorists and simulators—in the
fields of stellar dynamics, star formation and evolution in galactic
nuclei, compact objects, gravitational wave physics and
astrophysical relativity, to interact in an informal setting,
present new results, identify the key questions and discuss how to
address them.
There is no registration fee, but space is limited, so please let me know (email) that you are interested in participating and being on the mailing list.
220 V / 50 Hz. Israel
uses the
unique "type H" electrical plug. However,
newer buildings (including the Physics building) have
dual-use sockets that can also accept the more common
European
ungrounded "type C" plug.
Shops
There's a mini-market on campus near the
institute's old
(Bloch) gate (open Sun-Thu 7 AM-7 PM, Fri 7:30 AM-9 AM)
and a 24/7 mini-market on Herzl street opposite to the
institute's main gate. You can get anything you may
need within walking distance from the institute, on or
around Herzl street, which is Rehovot's main commercial
district—consult a local. As a rule, shops are closed
from Friday afternoon to Saturday
evening or Sunday morning. The Tiv-Ta'am supermarket near the train
station is open also on Fridays and Saturdays.
Fitness
Access to the
institute's sports and recreation center is free for
short-term visitors presenting their Visiting Scientists ID
card. A letter from your physician is required to get
permission to use the gym.
There is a varied
cluster of restaurants, coffee-shops and pubs in the hi-tech
industrial center north of the train station, at about 20 min walking
distance. There are also quite a few coffee-shops, pubs and
simple eateries (middle-eastern, pizza etc) along Herzl
St. The "Netanela" bistro style restaurant just in front of
the institute's main gate and the "Moo vaMoo" steakhouse
farther down Herzl St are personal favorites (the latter,
despite its silly name, is actually an excellent, nationally
recognized and rather expensive restaurant).
Getting around
The campus is small
and compact, and everything is within a short walking
distance. Taxis are easiest for local and intermediate
distance rides (in particular,
from/to Ben Gurion airport). Ask
the secretaries to order one for you,
call yourself (08)9462626, or take it directly from the
nearby HaNassi Taxi
dispatch station on 195 Herzl St. There is an
inter-city train
station just north of the campus, within about 15 min
walking distance. See
the Israel Railways website for routes,
timetables and fares.
